The first episode of Talking Monuments covered the Voortrekker monument also known as the Heritage Centre. This monument is situated just outside Pretoria – South Africa. A foundation of over 18 000 tons of concrete holds this monument paying tribute to the Afrikaner culture that founded the resistance movement from the British Cape Colony.

On this episode, we are taken on a tour inside the monument and our guide – Emma Fouche – explains the history and background of the monument as well as insight as regards the structure of the monument. The monument has 169 stairs from the hall of heroes to the top of the monument and 130 stairs from parking to the entrance of the monument. The site runs on a daily basis and many people from all around the world visit to learn about the Afrikaans history.
