A lioness, a heroine, the woman who fought like a man fighting for the democracy of her country, sacrificing everything she had for her country…we are talking about South Africa’s most celebrated icon, the mother to the South Africa’s democracy Mama Nomzamo Winifred Madikizela-Mandela who passed today, 02 April 2018, at the age of 81.
Her Personal Assistant‚ Zodwa Zwane‚ confirmed the struggle veteran’s death earlier this afternoon. She died after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of Netcare Milpark Hospital, Johannesburg, South Africa, since the start of the year. She yielded peacefully in the early hours this afternoon surrounded by her family and loved ones. Leaving the whole nation griefed, from the young to the old.
Born in Bizana in the Eastern Cape in 1936‚ she moved to Johannesburg to study social work after matriculating. She met lawyer and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela in 1957 and they were married a year later. They had children together. Winnie Mandela is known for always being by Nelson Mandela’s side throughout the fight against apartheid. She garnered so much respect for herself when Nelson Mandela was sentenced 27 years on Robbin Ireland, she took over the Umkhonto wisizwe (the military army of the ANC) and ran with it suffering innumerous arrests, she was put in solitary confinement in a condemned cell at Pretoria Central Prison, leaving her children behind…while suffering severe beatings and torture but she continued fighting for the freedom of South Africa leading many other men and women for the better future of this great nation. In 2016‚ she was conferred an Order of Luthuli in Silver during the National Orders Awards ceremony for her excellent contribution to the fight for the liberation of the people of South Africa.
