In this episode, Ada Ama-Njoku and her guest Mr. Stephen Hollis, a partner at Adams & Adams discuss Entertainment Law in South Africa, focusing on music & film; contractual aspects; image rights; distribution and content management rights.
Mr. Stephen Hollis highlights that there is no piece of instrument or legislation that deals with Entertainment Law in South Africa because different fields of entertainment law develop differently. He states that there are sufficient legislation that address different areas such as the IP laws and the Contract laws etc.
Ada and Stephen discussed some of the things that actors and musicians should look out for in their contracts such as their rights. Stephen advised that actors and musicians should never transfer their rights before consulting an IP lawyer. They discussed what amounts to a prejudicial contract for musicians and actors and how they can protect their image rights through trademarks.
