Star Award Winner
The Future Africa Leaders Award is presented to Lotan Salapei for his passionate commitment and outreach to ‘at risk’ youth and for his Dignity of the Girl Child campaign.
This year, 24 year old Lotan impacted orphaned youth and street children in his nation of Kenya through the provision of shelter and welfare packages and much needed educational and training programs. Lotan’s compassion and resourcefulness saw him partner with corporate organizations and individuals which resulted in financial aid to needy youth to complete their education. His efforts led to the adoption of a children’s home which saw over 300 street children receive educational and skills acquisition training, shelter and personal supplies. Lotan organized 2 impacting outreaches tagged ‘Reach out Street Children’ which saw another 300 street children receive educational training, welfare and mentoring.
Lotan’s attention was drawn to the plight of young school girls who would often miss 3 to 5 days of school every month during monthly menstrual cycle because of a lack of access to proper sanitary materials due to financial reasons. These frequent disruptions, for many of these girls, led to their eventual dropout from school, fueling the vicious cycle of poverty. His ‘Dignity of the Girl child’ campaign saw him partner with corporate manufacturers, resulting in sanitary towels and other ancillary much needed amenities provided up to 3,000 young girls with supplies lasting up till June 2015 thereby enabling them to pursue their education without distraction.
Lotan’s sphere of influence extended to 30 secondary schools in his city where he organized Christian events which saw 3,000 youth indelibly impacted. Lotan’s mentorship and commitment to building the lives of young people has birthed a new day in Kenya and ushered in a fresh and welcome wind of change.
