Do you know that as a consumer you have many rights?  Do you know that as a consumer you have a right to your privacy; the right to choose; the right to disclosure of information; the right to fair and honest dealing; the right to fair, just and reasonable terms and conditions; the right to fair value, good quality; safety and many more. These rights are enshrined in the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 (South Africa). The Act sets out the minimum requirements to ensure adequate consumer protection in South Africa.

Today we discuss these minimum requirements in relation to the consumer’s rights to:

a.  Fair and Honest Dealings

b.  Fair, Just and Reasonable Terms and Conditions; and

c.  Fair Value, Good Quality and Safety

One striking thing Mr. Rael, our guest on the show talked about is the Right to “fair and honest dealings” which has several other subcategories. Under this Act, no person can behave when selling you a product or service in an unconscionable way. You cannot force a product on a person or harass a person to sign or buy your product. If you were forced or harassed to buy a product, this right provides a way out for you, should you need it. Other examples under the consumers act are that if you were promised that a product was supposed to work a certain way, and it doesn’t you have the right to return that product.

Learn all these and so much more. This is a must watch, it is very enlightening, because a lot of us fall victim on many occasions. Ada Ama-Njoku and her guest, Mr. Rael Zimerman educate you on what your rights are as a consumer, and by the end of the episode you can give Mr. Rael a call or leave a comment in the comment box below. Let us know if you’ve ever had an encounter with sales personnel, companies, or people selling you products you never wanted or needed, or if you were unhappy with a product or service. If so, what did you do?
