Yesterday September 3rd, 2016, saw a Charity Match to raise £1 million for the Arsenal foundation, between Arsenal legends and AC Milan’s Glorie. Arsenal Foundation sought to raise the money for it’s mission to build pitches for children in London, Jordan and Somalia.
Arsenal’s team was managed by Arsene Wenger, and his long-time former assistant, Pat Rice, while the AC Milan side was managed by former England manager Fabio Capello, who In his first five seasons as a manager, won four Serie A titles with Milan, where he also won the1993–94 UEFA Champions League, defeating Barcelona 4–0 in a memorable final.
The game started with comedy, as Arsenal started with 12 players against 11 on the Milan side, because legendary Kanu Nwankwo did not realise he was on the reserve bench, and tried to gate-crash into the starting line-up. After some drama, and lots of laughter, midfielder Gilberto Silva escorted confused Kanu to the bench. You can watch a clip of the drama on our LoveWorldSAT SuperUser Account on KingsChat.
The game was a rare opportunity for Arsenal fans to see some of the Invincibles – Jen Lehmann, Pascal Cygan, Kolo Toure, Ray Parlour, Nigel Winterburn and Martin Keown again. Arsenal’s invincible won a second League and Cup double in 1997–98 and a third in 2001–02. In addition, the club reached the final of the 1999–2000 UEFA Cup, were victorious in the 2003 and 2005 FA Cups, and won the Premier League in 2003–04 without losing a single match, an achievement which earned the side the nickname “The Invincibles”. This latter feat came within a run of 49 league matches unbeaten from 7 May 2003 to 24 October 2004, a national record.
40-year-old Kanu, made up for his comedy, by coming off the bench to score a hat-trick, starting with a header from Emmanuel Petit’s cross on 27 minutes, before Milan’s Christian Vieri equalised five minutes before the break. Kanu scored his second in the 72nd minute before Pires got in on the act just a day after playing at the Wembley Cup, while Vieri netted a late consolation for Milan when he rebounded in a penalty which was well saved by David Seaman. The match ended in favour of Arsenal at 4-2.
